Donate to Teach For Japan
Problem
Japan faces significant societal challenges, including a super-aged society and a declining population. By 2050, it is almost certain that 40% of the population will be over 65, leading to a continuous decrease in the labor force.
Japan's Demographics by 2050
Percentage of teachers over 50 years old
This demographic shift also affects the teaching profession, contributing to a severe teacher shortage. In 19 out of 47 prefectures, the teacher recruitment exam pass rate has fallen to 1.0, meaning anyone can become a teacher, compromising quality. Additionally, Japan's investment in education is among the lowest in OECD countries, relying heavily on the dedication and passion of individual teachers, which has resulted in chronic overwork.
Teachers' Working Hours
Negative cycle of teacher shortage
Consequently, teachers have less time to engage with students, hindering their professional development and leading to burnout and mental health issues, ultimately reducing the quality of education and negatively impacting students' learning and growth.

Action
Updating Japanese Society
Starting with Teachers
Teach For Japan operates a fellowship program that places diverse individuals in schools as teachers. To provide high-quality education to as many children as possible, it is crucial to have teachers who believe in children's potential and create new learning experiences. Teach For Japan selects and trains capable teachers, regardless of their teaching license status, and collaborates with local governments to use temporary or special licenses, ensuring educational opportunities for tens of thousands of children. Our mission is to realize a world where every child can receive an excellent education.
